Why people ask whether Zoho Books is legit
What Zoho claims about itself
Zoho Corporation calls itself privately held and profitable, with 19,000 employees, in Zoho’s 30th-anniversary announcement of 18 February 2026. These are the vendor’s words, not an audit.
What this page covers
This page sets those claims against Zoho’s documents and record. Cost is in what Zoho Books actually costs to run, and plans are on Zoho’s published plan list.
What Zoho’s privacy and security documents commit to

Does Zoho sell your data?
No. Zoho’s privacy policy, last updated 22 December 2025, says it has never sold user information for advertising. It also says Zoho does not “make a single dollar from advertising revenue,” including from free editions.
Which audits cover Zoho Books
On 17 October 2026, Zoho’s compliance page named Zoho Books under its SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 + HIPAA Type 2 reports, and listed ISO/IEC 27001 for all Zoho cloud services, valid to 21 August 2028. Books’ PCI self-assessment showed a validity date of 14 October 2026, already past when we read it.
Who inside Zoho can see your books
The policy restricts staff access to customer data to specific individuals, logged and audited. Sign-in settings are covered in how Zoho Books protects your financial data.
Who owns Zoho Books today
Zoho Books is owned by Zoho Corporation Private Limited, which holds the Zoho trademarks under Zoho’s Terms of Service.

Zoho Corporation and its founders
Zoho’s February 2026 release gives Chennai, India, as headquarters, and co-founder Sridhar Vembu calls the company bootstrapped. We found no Zoho-published breakdown of its shareholders.
Leadership since January 2025
Vembu is now chief scientist, per that release. Zoho’s ManageEngine division lists Shailesh Kumar Davey as co-founder and CEO of Zoho Corp, a change reported at the time as January 2025. Several software directories still name Vembu as CEO.

Three red flags on Zoho’s public record
Searches we ran on 17 October 2026 found no public report of a Zoho Books customer-data breach. Three incidents are on the record.
| Date | What happened | What it did not touch |
|---|---|---|
| 24 Sep 2018 | zoho.com blocked by its registrar for hours | No data loss reported |
| Sep 2021 | Critical flaw in ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus | Zoho Books (not named by CISA) |
| Jan 2025 | Court order over Zoho’s US entities, disputed | No service impact reported |
September 2018: zoho.com taken offline by its registrar
Registrar TierraNet blocked zoho.com for hours over phishing complaints about Zoho-hosted email, according to contemporaneous coverage of the outage.
September 2021: a critical flaw in ManageEngine, not Zoho Books
CVE-2021-40539 hit ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus, password software organisations run themselves; Zoho shipped fix build 6114 on 6 September 2021. The FBI–CISA advisory on the ManageEngine flaw, dated 16 September 2021, does not mention Zoho Books.
2025–2026: a disputed California court order over Zoho’s US entities
In January 2025, an Alameda County court in Vembu’s divorce case ordered a $1.7 billion bond, appointed a receiver over US entities including Zoho Corp, and paused that subsidiary’s restructuring. The News Minute reported on 9 January 2026 that Vembu’s lawyer calls the order invalid and on appeal, with the receivership stayed, while the opposing lawyer says it stands.
We have not seen the court record itself.
What would change the verdict on Zoho Books
Signals to watch
- A security advisory naming a Zoho finance product.
- An ownership change, which the privacy policy promises to announce.
- A significant Terms change, which brings 30 days’ email notice and a prorated refund if you leave.
Your exit plan if they appear
🛟 Back This Up First: Export transactions, contacts and reports before closing the account, using how to export your Zoho Books data.
After closure, the privacy policy says data leaves active systems within six months and backups three months later. Zoho’s Terms cap its liability at $1,000 or your prior 12 months’ fees, whichever is higher.
Who should be cautious before signing up
Free-plan users who log in rarely
⚠️ This Costs You: Zoho’s Terms, last updated 2 March 2022, allow Zoho to delete unpaid accounts that are inactive for 120 days in a row, after giving notice. Each service counts separately, so using Zoho Mail does not keep Books active.
Other rules: Zoho Books free plan limits.
Annual subscribers near renewal
Zoho’s refund policy, read 17 October 2026, allows a full refund up to 15 days after an annual renewal. The Terms ask for notice seven days before renewal; details are in Zoho Books’ refund policy explained.
Businesses that need an accountant’s sign-off
Whether Zoho Books meets your tax or audit obligations is a question for your accountant.
🧾 Not Tested: No Zoho Books account was opened for this article; it relies on dated documents and reports.
