The short version
We do not sell your personal information. We collect very little of it ourselves: what you type into our contact form, and standard technical data your browser sends to any website. Advertising and analytics partners, including Google, set cookies on this site and use them to serve and measure ads. You can opt out of personalised advertising using the links in section 6, and you can ask us to delete anything we hold on you by writing to info@thesoftwarescribe.com.

2.Information we collect
Information you give us
When you submit our contact form or email us directly, we receive your name, your email address, and whatever you write in your message. We do not ask for any other personal detail, and you should not send us financial account information or identity documents.
Information collected automatically
Like every website, our hosting server records technical data each time a page is requested. This includes your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, the page you requested, the page you came from, and the date and time. These server logs are used for security and troubleshooting.
Information collected by cookies
Our advertising and analytics partners set cookies and similar technologies in your browser. These are described in sections 5 to 7 and in our cookie policy.
Comments
If you leave a comment on an article, we store the name and email address you provide, your comment text, your IP address, and your browser user agent string. WordPress uses this to display the comment and to filter spam.
3.How we use your information
- To answer your message when you contact us
- To investigate and correct factual errors you report in our articles
- To keep the website secure and to diagnose technical faults
- To understand which articles are read, so we know what to write next
- To display advertising that funds the site
- To comply with legal obligations that apply to us
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
4.Legal bases for processing
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following legal bases under the GDPR:
- Consent for advertising and analytics cookies. You give this through our consent banner and you can withdraw it at any time.
- Legitimate interests for security logging and for responding to enquiries you send us.
- Legal obligation where we are required to retain or disclose data by law.
5.Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site uses a small number of functional cookies needed for the site to work, plus advertising and analytics cookies set by third parties.
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking functional cookies may stop parts of the site working. A full breakdown of each category, including how to withdraw consent, is in our cookie policy.
6.Advertising
We use Google AdSense to display advertising. This is how the site is funded.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
- Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also serve ads on this site and may use their own cookies and similar technologies.
You can control the advertising you see:
- Opt out of personalised advertising by Google at Google My Ad Center.
- Read how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and its advertising practices at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
- Opt out of participating third-party vendors at aboutads.info/choices and optout.networkadvertising.org.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, advertising cookies are set only after you consent through our banner. Withdrawing consent stops personalised advertising but you will still see non-personalised ads.
7.Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to measure how many people read our articles and which pages they reach. It tells us page views, approximate location at country or city level, device type, and how visitors arrived. We do not use it to identify individual readers.
Google’s privacy practices are described at policies.google.com/privacy. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
8.Affiliate links
Some links to software products on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and sign up, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. The affiliate network records that the click came from us, usually through a cookie, so the sale can be attributed.
These links do not change what we recommend. Our affiliate disclosure explains the arrangement in full, and our editorial policy covers how we keep commercial relationships out of editorial decisions.
9.Who we share data with
We share personal data only with service providers who help us run the site, and only as far as they need it:
- Our web hosting provider, which stores the site and its server logs
- Google, for advertising and analytics
- Our email provider, which delivers and stores the messages you send us
- Affiliate networks, which record referral clicks
We may also disclose information if we are required to by law, a court order, or a valid request from a public authority.
10.International transfers
We operate from India, and data you send us is stored and processed there. Our service providers may process data in other countries, including the United States. Where personal data of EEA or UK residents is transferred outside those regions, our providers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard approved under applicable law.
11.How long we keep data
- Contact form messages and emails: up to 24 months after our last exchange with you, unless you ask us to delete them sooner
- Server logs: typically 30 to 90 days, depending on our host’s retention settings
- Comments: retained while the article is published, unless you ask for removal
- Cookie data held by third parties: governed by those parties’ own retention periods
12.Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have some or all of the following rights over the personal data we hold about you:
- Ask for a copy of it
- Ask us to correct it if it is wrong
- Ask us to delete it
- Ask us to restrict how we use it, or object to our using it
- Withdraw consent you previously gave, at any time
- Complain to your data protection authority
EEA and UK residents hold these rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR. California residents hold rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including the right to know what is collected and the right to delete it. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in that law. Residents of India hold rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
To exercise any of these, email info@thesoftwarescribe.com from the address you contacted us on. We respond within 30 days. There is no charge.
13.Children’s privacy
This site is written for business and professional readers and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, email info@thesoftwarescribe.com and we will delete it.
14.Security
The site is served over HTTPS, access to the content management system is restricted to our own team, and administrative accounts are protected by strong credentials. No website can promise absolute security, and we do not claim to. We hold very little personal data, which is itself the strongest protection we can offer.
15.Links to other sites
Our articles link out to software vendors, documentation and other publications. Once you follow a link, you are on someone else’s site under their privacy policy, and we have no control over what they collect. We recommend reading the policy of any site where you enter personal information.
16.Changes to this policy
We update this policy when our practices change or when the law requires it. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Material changes will be announced on this page. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
17.How to contact us
For any privacy or data protection question, including requests to access or delete your data, write to info@thesoftwarescribe.com or to the postal address in section 1. For anything editorial, use our contact page.
