Charged after cancelling Xero, and why the extra month is billed

Table of Contents
Most Xero charges after cancellation are the notice month, not an error. Xero bills subscriptions a month in advance and requires one month’s notice, and its terms state no refund is due (clauses 57 and 59, retrieved 7 September 2026). Five other documented causes exist, from connected apps to an App Store purchase Xero cannot cancel for you.

Which of six causes explains your charge
Six documented causes produce a Xero charge after cancellation. Five are policy working as written. Only one is a fault.
| Cause | What you’d see on the statement | Documented in |
|---|---|---|
| Notice period | One more charge at your usual plan price | Terms of use, clause 57 |
| Connected apps | Charges under app names, not Xero’s | Xero Central cancellation article |
| Usage charges | A smaller charge for payroll, projects or expenses | Xero’s US FAQ |
| A second organization | A full charge while another org is cancelled | Xero Central cancellation article |
| Cancellation never registered | No cancel option, or an unpaid balance | Xero Central cancellation article |
| App Store purchase | A charge from Apple or Google | Xero Central cancellation article |
Check your account state before anything else
Only the subscriber can cancel a Xero subscription, and that subscriber may be your accountant. A free trial also cancels differently from a paid plan.
Then match the amount
A charge matching your plan price is almost always the notice month. Anything smaller is usually an add-on or a connected app. The full exit picture sits in our Xero pricing and exit costs guide.
What the amount should be
Compare the charge against Xero’s published US list price for your plan. A notice-month charge matches it exactly, before tax.
| Plan | US list price, verified 7 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Early | $25 a month (7 Sep 2026) |
| Growing | $55 a month (7 Sep 2026) |
| Established | $90 a month (7 Sep 2026) |
๐ต Verified: Early $25, Growing $55, Established $90 a month, USD and excluding sales tax โ Xero’s US pricing page, retrieved 7 September 2026.
๐๏ธ Pricing verified 7 September 2026. Software pricing changes frequently โ confirm on the vendor’s site before acting.
Xero has published that US prices rise from 1 October 2026, which changes what a notice month costs after that date. The figures and who they hit are covered in our Xero price increase breakdown.

Why the charge is owed

Two mechanics combine, and neither is visible at the moment you click cancel. Xero charges subscription fees a month in advance, and it requires one month’s notice to leave.
๐ Why It Works This Way: Xero states that subscriptions are charged in advance on a monthly basis, while usage charges for add-ons and chargeable bank feeds are invoiced for the previous month โ Xero’s US FAQ, retrieved 7 September 2026. One invoice, two directions. That is why a final invoice can look like it covers dates you have already left and dates you have not reached.
The notice month is charged, not waived
Xero’s offer terms state that if you cancel, you are still charged for the notice period, retrieved 7 September 2026. Access continues for that month. The mechanics of how the window runs are set out in our guide to Xero’s cancellation notice.
No refund is due
Clause 59 of Xero’s terms of use states no refund is due when you terminate, retrieved 7 September 2026. Clause 68 preserves non-excludable statutory guarantees where local law provides them.
What cancelling Xero does not cancel
Cancelling stops the Xero subscription. It stops nothing else that Xero’s billing touches.
Connected apps keep charging
Cancelling a Xero subscription does not cancel connected app subscriptions, and each must be cancelled individually, per Xero’s cancellation article, retrieved 7 September 2026. These appear on a statement under the app’s name.
App Store purchases are outside Xero
If the subscription was bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play, it is cancelled through Apple or Google, following their instructions. Cancelling inside Xero does not reach it.
Other organizations bill on
Cancellation applies to one organization. If you are the subscriber for several, cancelling one leaves the others billing normally.
โ ๏ธ This Costs You: A connected app or a second organization can keep charging indefinitely after you believe you have left, because nothing in the Xero cancellation flow stops either one. Check what else shares your billing account before you assume the charge is Xero’s.
Which dates your final invoice covers
Do not calculate this from your cancellation date. Read the billing period printed on the invoice itself, because the advance charge and any usage charges cover different spans.
Xero states you will receive the invoice at the end of your monthly billing period, with payment taken on the date shown on it, retrieved 7 September 2026. Your final invoice will therefore often arrive on a different date from every invoice before it.
If your notice period runs past 1 October 2026
Xero’s auto-renewal terms say your card is charged the then-current fees, and its price-change notice says the new US prices show on invoices from 1 October 2026. Neither page states which rate applies to a notice period that begins before that date and ends after it. We have asked Xero and will update this section when we have an answer. Until then, check the rate on the invoice rather than assuming it matches your last one.
What to do if none of this explains it

Work through this in order. Most charges resolve at step one or two.
- Open Subscriptions and billing in your account and read the final invoice’s period line and rate.
- Confirm you are the subscriber. If your accountant holds the subscription, they have to act โ see our guide to who Xero actually bills.
- Check for an unpaid balance. An overdue amount or a suspended organization has to be cleared before a cancellation will go through.
- If the charge still matches nothing above, contact Xero support from the foot of any Xero Central article. Xero publishes no support phone number, so treat any phone number you find elsewhere as untrustworthy.
๐ Back This Up First: Export your reports, invoices and contacts before the notice period ends. Once the subscription ends, the data is archived and cannot be accessed by anyone until you reactivate. If you are moving to another product, our Xero to QuickBooks migration notes cover what does not travel.
โ Do This: Raise it with Xero support in writing before disputing the charge with your card issuer. Reversing a charge that is owed under the notice clause does not cancel the obligation and can end your account. Xero’s terms route unresolved disputes through support first, then arbitration or small claims โ clause 64, retrieved 7 September 2026.
๐งพ Not Tested: We have not run a Xero cancellation ourselves. Doing so needs a paid US subscription carried through a full notice-period billing cycle, which we do not hold. Everything above is read from Xero’s published pages on 7 September 2026, not observed on an account. One source โ Xero Central’s cancellation article โ is a live vendor page we could not render for capture; the claims drawn from it are marked for confirmation before this page is treated as final.
Common questions
1. How long is Xero’s cancellation notice period?
One month, per clause 57 of Xero’s terms of use, retrieved 7 September 2026. Your access continues throughout it.
2. Will Xero refund the notice month?
No. Xero’s terms state no refund is due on termination, subject to non-excludable statutory guarantees where local law provides them.
3. Is Xero billed in advance or in arrears?
Subscription fees are charged a month in advance. Add-on usage charges and chargeable bank feeds are invoiced for the previous month.
4.Does cancelling Xero cancel my connected apps?
No. Connected app subscriptions must each be cancelled individually, or their charges continue after the Xero subscription ends.
5. Why can’t I see the cancel option?
Only the subscriber can cancel. An unpaid balance or a suspended organization also blocks cancellation until the amount is paid.
6. I subscribed through the App Store โ can Xero cancel it?
No. Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are cancelled with Apple or Google, following their published instructions.
7. Can I stop a Xero cancellation once I have started it?
Yes, at any point inside the one month notice period, from your account or the Xero mobile app.
8. What happens to my data after cancellation?
It is archived and cannot be accessed by anyone, and stays retrievable for up to seven years by reactivating, unless you request deletion.
9. Will my final invoice use the October 2026 price?
Xero’s auto-renewal terms charge then-current fees, but no Xero page addresses notice periods specifically. Check the rate on the invoice.
Open your billing page, find the final invoice, and read its period line and rate before you do anything else. That one check separates a notice-month charge you owe from a connected app or a second organization you can still stop.
