Xero free trial: the card timing, and the button we didn’t find

Xero free trial options compared with one month free and 90% off offers

Xero’s free trial runs 30 days and takes no card to start β€” Xero’s US FAQ says billing information is added after the trial ends, verified 3 September 2026. On that date, none of the four Xero pages we captured carried a free-trial button. The US pricing page showed Buy now; the UK pricing page showed one month free.

Which door you’re actually being offered

Xero offers three ways in, and they are not interchangeable.

If you want to try before you pay

The free trial is the only route that asks for no payment details at signup. Whether it is still reachable from Xero’s public pages is the last question here.

If you have already decided to buy

Two other routes exist, and both are purchases that take a card, per Xero’s published offer terms retrieved 3 September 2026. Which one you pick changes what you are allowed to do afterwards.

What the free trial costs, and when Xero asks for a card

No card is asked for at signup.

The Xero free trial runs for 30 days, with payment details needed to continue with a paid subscription after the trial.

Xero’s US FAQ states that after your trial you are asked to add your billing information, and are billed monthly from that point β€” retrieved 3 September 2026.

How long you get

A free trial expires after 30 days, or earlier if you buy a subscription before then, per Xero’s published offer terms retrieved 3 September 2026.

πŸ’΅ Verified: The trial runs 30 days and no payment method is requested to start it β€” Xero’s US FAQ and its published offer terms, both retrieved 3 September 2026.

When the card is asked for

Continuing afterwards means purchasing a subscription and entering payment details β€” the card arrives at the end, not the beginning. Xero accepts Visa or Mastercard debit and credit cards, Maestro debit cards, or direct debit, per the same FAQ retrieved 3 September 2026.

What that first bill comes to depends on the plan, and our pillar sets out what each plan costs after the trial.

What the trial includes, where Xero contradicts itself

Xero’s own pages do not agree on this.

Xero’s FAQ and offer terms describe free-trial features differently, creating an important point to verify before signing up.

What Xero’s FAQ says

Asked whether the trial includes access to all features, Xero’s US FAQ answers yes β€” all features and any add-ons, retrieved 3 September 2026.

What Xero’s terms say

Xero’s published offer terms state that features in the free trial edition are limited, retrieved 3 September 2026. Neither page says which document governs, and we are not going to settle that on Xero’s behalf.

The one exclusion Xero names

One limit appears on the FAQ itself: if your bank charges a fee to connect a direct bank feed, you cannot connect that feed while you are in your trial. Which features each paid tier withholds is a different question, covered in what each tier blocks.

Xero lists W-9 and 1099 handling across its US plans. Whether any tier, or the trial, satisfies a filing obligation is a question for your accountant and not for this page.

What happens on day 30, and the cancellation you can’t undo

Doing nothing and cancelling are not the same outcome.

If you do nothing

Xero asks you to pick a plan and add billing details. If you choose not to continue, you may delete your organization in the My Xero section when you log in β€” Xero’s US FAQ, retrieved 3 September 2026.

If you cancel before day 30

πŸ›Ÿ Back This Up First: Export your reports, invoices, contacts and bank transactions before you cancel a trial. Xero recommends exporting first because you will not be able to access that organization afterwards β€” Xero’s US FAQ, retrieved 3 September 2026.

A free trial can be cancelled at any time from within your Xero account, per the same page.

What you lose

⚠️ This Costs You: Cancel during a free trial and you will not be able to reactivate that subscription β€” Xero’s US FAQ, retrieved 3 September 2026. A cancelled paid subscription is archived instead, and remains reachable for up to seven years by reactivating it. The trial has no equivalent. Export first, then cancel.

The one-month notice period applies to paid subscriptions rather than trials, and our cancellation notice article covers how that works.

Free trial, one month free, or 90% off β€” you only get one

These three routes exclude each other, and Xero’s terms say so directly.

Why one month free is not a trial

Xero’s offer terms put it plainly: you have access to all available features of the plan you purchased with the Offer, as this is not a trial account. It is 100% off list price for one month, for certain new customers based in the United States and New Zealand, and it can only be purchased with an accepted credit or debit card β€” retrieved 3 September 2026. We could not establish whether US visitors are currently shown it; the US pricing page we captured offered only the six-month discount.

What taking a discount forfeits

Promotional pricing and free trials cannot be combined, and if you have elected to buy a paid subscription you are not eligible for a free trial β€” same terms, same date. Xero’s US pricing page also carries a notice that subscription prices increase from October 1, 2026, retrieved 3 September 2026, and our breakdown of what changes on 1 October has the figures.

Where the free trial button was, and wasn’t

On 3 September 2026 we captured four Xero pages, and none of them carried a free-trial button.

What the same pages still say about the trial

Xero’s US product page carries a meta description reading “Try free – no credit card needed!”, and its own FAQ answers the cost question by telling readers that to try Xero’s software and features, start a 30-day free trial β€” retrieved 3 September 2026. Every button on that page routes to a paid purchase.

What to do if you can’t find it

βœ… Do This: Check your own region before concluding anything. This is one retrieval, on one date, from one location, and Xero routes and tests its pages by market β€” the UK pages show a different offer entirely. If no trial button appears for you, your real choice is the one-month offer or the discount, and both take a card.

🧾 Not Tested: We hold no Xero account and did not start a free trial for this article. Everything above comes from Xero’s published FAQ, its offer terms, its US and UK pricing pages and its US product page, each retrieved 3 September 2026. We could not check the signup form itself, and we could not establish whether a trial can still be started from inside an existing account.

1.Does the Xero free trial require a credit card?

No card is asked for at signup. Xero’s US FAQ says billing information is added after the trial ends, verified 3 September 2026.

2. How long is the Xero free trial?

Thirty days, or less if you buy a subscription first, per Xero’s published offer terms retrieved 3 September 2026.

3. What happens when the Xero free trial ends?

Xero asks you to add billing information and bills monthly from that point, or you can delete the organization instead.

4. Are Xero free trial features limited?

Xero’s FAQ says all features and add-ons are available; its offer terms say trial features are limited. Both retrieved 3 September 2026.

5. Can I keep my data if I cancel the Xero trial?

Export first. Xero’s FAQ states a cancelled trial subscription cannot be reactivated and access to that organization ends.

6. Can I use the Xero free trial and a discount together?

No. Xero’s offer terms state promotional pricing and free trials cannot be combined, and buying a subscription ends trial eligibility.

7. Is Xero’s one month free the same as the free trial?

No. Xero’s terms call it a purchase requiring a credit or debit card, and state it is not a trial account.

8. Why is there no Xero free trial button?

We cannot say why. On 3 September 2026 the four Xero pages we captured showed only purchase and offer buttons.

9. Does the Xero free trial charge me automatically?

Not from a card you never entered. Continuing requires purchasing a subscription and entering payment details, per Xero’s offer terms.

10. Can I run a Xero free trial for a second organization?

Xero’s US FAQ says you can add organizations and set up a 30-day free trial for each one.

What this comes down to

The trial exists in Xero’s documentation, runs 30 days, asks for no card until it ends, and cannot be reversed once you cancel it. What we could not find on 3 September 2026 was a button leading to it. Check your region, then decide between a free month and a discount β€” both of which take a card. Next check: 1 October 2026.
