Is Zoho Books Safe? The Plain Record on Encryption and Feeds

Is Zoho Books safe? Zoho’s 16 March 2026 whitepaper lists which bank data gets AES-256. Read the field list, feed setup and incident record.

Zoho Books financial data protected by encryption, a security shield, and multi-factor authentication.

Mostly yes, with dated caveats. As captured 17 October 2026, Zoho’s compliance page lists Books under ISO/IEC 27001 (valid until 21 August 2028) and SOC 1 Type 2. Zoho encrypts bank details and statements at rest with AES-256. Books does not store your bank login; a feed aggregator uses it. Searches that day showed no public disclosure of a Books customer-data breach. Its PCI DSS listing showed a 14 October 2026 expiry.

What Zoho promises about your financial data

Zoho’s commitments sit in its privacy policy, last updated 22 December 2025. They are statements, not audit findings.

Who owns the data

The policy says you own your service data. Zoho says it processes that data only on your instructions.

Does Zoho sell or advertise

Zoho states it has never sold user information for advertising, and has never earned money from other companies’ ads.

Can Zoho staff see it

In limited cases, yes. The policy allows employee access to fix errors, check spam reports, or verify scanned-image recognition. Zoho says that access is restricted, logged and audited.

What Zoho Books actually encrypts

Zoho’s encryption whitepaper, last updated 16 March 2026, says the data encrypted at rest differs by service. “AES-256” does not mean every field.

In transit

The security whitepaper (last updated 4 December 2024) says every connection must use TLS 1.2 or 1.3 with strong ciphers. It also says perfect forward secrecy and HSTS are enabled.

At rest: the field list

For Zoho’s Finance apps, the encrypted-field list names:

  • bank account details
  • custom fields marked for encryption
  • sensitive employee details
  • travel documents
  • bank statements and attachments

Ordinary ledger entries, such as invoice lines, are not named on that list. Master keys rotate automatically every six months.

Zoho Books encrypted fields such as bank details and statements shown separately from ordinary ledger entries.
Zoho Books encryption applies to specifically listed sensitive fields, not automatically to every accounting record.

🔍 Why It Works This Way: Encryption here happens at the application layer. For listed fields, Zoho says a database or support user without keys from its key service sees only ciphertext.

Full-disk encryption by data centre

Hardware full-disk encryption is on by default for all services only in the India, Australia and Japan data centres. Elsewhere it covers certain services only.

Does Zoho Books get your bank password?

No. Zoho’s US help article, retrieved 17 October 2026, says Books does not store your bank login. The bank feed provider uses it to fetch statements, which reach Books over 256-bit SSL.

Which aggregator your edition uses

The US article lists three providers as of 17 October 2026:

  • Yodlee covers all editions except the EU data centre and the UAE and Saudi Arabia editions.
  • Token covers the EU data centre and the UK edition.
  • Plaid covers the US and Canada editions.

Some regional copies of the page still list Yodlee for all editions. The US version is the current one.

Zoho Books bank feed flow showing credentials handled by an aggregator before statements reach the accounting software.
Zoho Books receives bank statements through a feed provider; the provider handles the bank login credentials.

The aggregator’s own record

On 20 July 2022, a federal court in Northern California approved Plaid’s $58 million class settlement. The claims alleged Plaid collected and sold bank data without consent, and Plaid denied liability. The case involved payment apps, not Zoho Books.

🔍 Why It Works This Way: Your bank password’s safety depends on the aggregator’s handling, not on Zoho’s servers. If a feed stops after you change that password, see if your feed won’t connect.

Has Zoho Books ever been breached?

Searches on 17 October 2026 turned up no public disclosure of a Zoho Books customer-data breach. They covered news coverage, CVE databases and Zoho’s community. That is a negative finding, not a guarantee.

Who runs Zoho

Zoho’s February 2026 announcement describes a privately held company that is profitable, founded in 1996 and headquartered in Chennai. It lists co-founder Sridhar Vembu as Chief Scientist.

Incidents that touched Zoho customers

  • 2014: CVE-2014-6686 records that version 3.1.9 of the Zoho Books Android app did not verify SSL certificates. It is the only Books-specific CVE located.
  • 24 September 2018: registrar TierraNet blocked zoho.com over phishing complaints. Zoho said it had received three complaints in two months, and the domain was restored.

Incidents that didn’t touch Books

CVE-2021-40539 affected ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus build 6113 and earlier, a product from Zoho’s IT division. CISA added it to its exploited-vulnerabilities catalogue on 3 November 2021.

The Red Cross says attackers used it on 9 November 2021 to reach data on more than 515,000 people. The ICRC says it had not applied the patch in time.

Zoho Books certifications and their expiry dates

These are the attestations Zoho’s compliance page applies to Books, as captured on 17 October 2026.

SOC 2 Type 2Yes — all cloud servicesAnnual Dec–Nov audit, no expiry shown (captured 17 Oct 2026)
PCI DSS (SAQ-D)Yes — named14 Oct 2026, no renewal posted (captured 17 Oct 2026)

The PCI DSS listing

Zoho’s PCI DSS listing is a self-assessment, not an external audit. When captured on 17 October 2026, it still showed 14 October 2026 as its validity date. We could not confirm a renewal, and this line changes when Zoho posts one.

⚠️ This Costs You: If your card processor or auditor asks for your accounting vendor’s PCI attestation, the public listing will not satisfy them as captured. Zoho says verified organisation admins can download current reports from Zoho Accounts after accepting its NDA.

What these do not cover for you

These attestations cover Zoho’s systems. They do not make your business PCI, tax or HIPAA compliant; those obligations remain yours.

Who should be careful, and what you control

Most of the remaining risk sits on your side of the login.

Turn on MFA

Zoho supports multi-factor authentication through its OneAuth app, according to the security whitepaper dated 4 December 2024. OneAuth offers biometrics, push, QR code and time-based codes, and Zoho also supports YubiKey hardware keys. Limit who sees bank data with Zoho Books user roles.

âś… Do This: Enable MFA before you connect a bank feed, not after.

If you’re outside the IN, AU or JP data centres

Full-disk encryption is not on by default for every service there (see the encryption section above). If that matters for compliance, ask Zoho which applies to Books in your region.

Before you leave Zoho

After an account is closed, the privacy policy says data leaves the active database within 6 months, and leaves backups within 3 months after that. Export your Zoho Books data first, then cancel the subscription.

🧾 Not Tested: We did not open a Zoho Books account for this article, and no settings screen was viewed first-hand. Everything above comes from Zoho’s published documentation, a court record and vulnerability databases, all captured 17 October 2026.

The verdict on Zoho Books security

Zoho Books’ documented controls hold up against its public record, which shows no disclosed Books data breach. The controls include AES-256 on listed bank data and TLS on every connection.

Two items need watching: the PCI listing, and full-disk encryption outside three data centres. If cost is the deciding question, see what Zoho Books actually costs.
